Best Practices in Deaf Education

This training is designed to provide child study team members and school leaders with an overview of hearing loss and how to program for students who are deaf/hard of hearing who use hearing technology.

I) Understanding Communication Approaches: Listening and Spoken Language (LSL), Total Communication (TC), and American Sign Language (ASL)

II) The Nuts and Bolts of Hearing Technology: From Hearing Aids and Cochlear Implants to Remote Microphone Systems

III) How to interpret an Audiological Evaluation/Audiogram to inform programming decisions

IV) Summit Speech School Tools of the Trade: Review of the equipment used in our audiology booth and throughout our program

V) Identity and other Social/Emotional considerations for students with hearing loss

VI) IEP Considerations: From Special Education Eligibility to Communication Plans and other IEP Best Practices

  • Understanding the role of an Itinerant ToD/HH and the services provided
